Vanessa Williams
Vanessa Williams was the first ever African-American to become Miss America. Being crowned in 1983, the next year she received an anonymous phone call. The stranger told her that he had her nude pictures. The photos has been taken in 1982 by the photographer Tom Chiapel. At that time Williams was working as a makeup artist in New York, and Tom Chiapel asked her and another model to pose for him naked. According to Williams, Chiapel wanted to try a new concept of silhouettes. He photographed her and another model in a few sexual positions, and promised to destroy the photos. Bob Guccione, the Penthouse publisher, bought the photos and published them in the September issue of his magazine, resulting in Williams withdrawing from Pageant. Williams career as Beauty Queen has been damaged, but she embarked on a successful musical and acting career, while her photos netted Guccione a profit of $15 million.
Edison Chen
Edison Chen’s photo scandal is an example how leaked photos can destroy not only a career of one person, but careers of four people at least. The Canadian-Chinese actors and singer had a successful film and musical career. By the time that the photo scandal has started, Chen had a total of 16 music albums and had appeared in more than twenty films. By January 2008 the photos of Chen having sex with different popular actresses have been all over the internet. At first Chen tried to convince everybody that photos are fake, but in the end he admitted to taking them. Around 1,300 photos of Chen having sex with actresses including Gillian Chung and Bobo Chan were leaked on the internet, by the technician who had stolen them from Chen’s laptop while repairing it. After that scandal Edison Chen held a press conference were he claimed to be a sex addict. While his career wasn’t destroyed completely, Chen is keeping more or less low profile after that.
Chris Brown
Chris Brown had been the rising star of music industry, until the scandal after domestic abuse. Chris Brown was dating Rihanna. On March the 5th, 2009, Chris Brown was arrested for domestic violence. Of course, things could have been settled in the court without public knowing anything, but the photos of Rihanna with sustained visible injures leaked on the internet, and Brown lost a lot of his fans. As a result Brown’s career is in constant limbo with all of his post-scandal albums struggling to sell, at least as much as his pre-scandal releases.
